secondstar
The good people at 3hive posted about these guys yesterday. This is a pretty darn good little ep so I thought I would re post it for the 8 people a month that look at my blog. The band is called secondstar. They sound to me like the Fleet Foxes mixed with a little Neil Young. If you like what you hear, they are offering their ep for free here.

The Avett Brothers
The EP from The Avett Brothers is now available on iTunes. It includes three songs, all from the new album. I have listened to this several times now, and I think it's pretty good. I'm a little concerned by how "polished" the songs sound. Regardless, it should be a great album when it comes out in September. I am looking forward to seeing them at Red Butte Gardens in August. Here is one of their new songs. Enjoy.

R.I.P. Michael
This record was played at least a thousand times at my house when I was a kid. I even had a Thriller birthday party, where we rented the Thriller VHS from the Sounds Easy, gathered around the TV and watched all 20 minutes of the best music video ever made. Thanks for making a couple decent records and a REALLY cool video game before you went cuckoo.

Japandroids!
Japandroids are a two-piece band out of Vancouver Canada. Their Album "Post-Nothing" just came out on the 29th of April. It is my favorite CD I've heard so far this year. I have listened to this several times and the only way I can describe them is, a guitar and drums punch to the face! You can buy their record from iTunes or Insound, and listen to a couple of their songs on their MySpace page. I highly highly recommend them.

The Replacements
Ahhhhhh, The Replacements. I love them. This album is from 1981 and it's still as good as ever. It does not fit into any genre, mixing hardcore elements with punk and good old rock-n-roll. Check it out. Also, check out lala to stream and buy digital music for a very reasonable price. It's a great alternative over iTunes, especially because you get to preview an entire song or album, not just 30 second snipets.

cate the poet
My 8 (almost 9) year old daughter Cate loves to write. Last night she wrote her first poem, at least the first one that she's been willing to share with us.
"Spike"
I have a fish.
Only he just sits there.
I haven't fed him since last year.
I hope he can still hear.
I wonder if he's died?
His name is Spike.
We're at the doctor's to see what's wrong with him.
It's our turn.
The doctor says he's died.
He flushed him down the toilet.
I said bye to Spike.

Go here to see a great performance of "So Whatcha Want" by the Beastie Boys. This is from '92 and it was performed on the Arsenio Hall show. Stay tuned for special guests at the end.

walmart
I hate Walmart. I hate their stupid tight-spaced parking lots. I hate how crowded they are. I hate how dirty and unorganized they are. I hate that they are so darn cheap that it forces me to shop there, which is no one's fault but my own. However, I hate Walmart. I had to go to Walmart today to get Max a bike for his birthday. It was a simple task. I knew the exact bike I was to purchase, I knew where to find it, it couldn't have been any easier. Until, I get back to the bikes and the one I want, of course, isn't in the contraptions that they use to suspend the bikes. I do notice however that there is ONE hanging from the ceiling with about a jillion other bikes. That's when it got fun, because now I have to find an employee. With the help of my friend D, we track down someone in the bike vicinity and ask him to get the bike down for us. I think we might have ruined his day. He said that he would go find someone and we waited. After 5 or so minutes, it seemed like 20, he comes back, he has no ladder or cherry-picker and no one else with him. "Which bike is it?" he asks. I point out the bike to him, by then another Walmart dude shows up. He asks which bike is it, and i go through trying to point way up into the sky at the one bike in a sea of millions that I need. Then they both dissappear for several minutes. Finally the original guy shows up with the bike. Boom just like that. I was very happy that the ordeal was finally over and I got Max's bike. He had better love it.

Olly Olly Oxen Free
Bishop Allen has posted their new video to the song "Dimmer". It is meant to be a throw back to the early MTV days, when they used to play music videos, and it turned out very cool. A special thanks to my pal Sean for sharing this.

Springville Museum of Art
So we went to Springville today and visited the Museum of Art which happens to be the oldest art museum in Utah. They have a few exhibits going on. The Lincoln exhibit, the Russian art of the Soviet era exhibit and the Utah High School Student Art Showcase. We walked through all three exhibits, and they were all very cool but, the High School Art exhibit was the best. There are some amazing artists out there. It was really refreshing to me to see that most of the pieces were hand drawn or painted or scratched or shot with a camera. Digital media was not really represented. The High School exhibit is going on until March 27, everyone should check it out, it's free too. Give your selves some culture and go.
